Your daughter just got the DM: “We're building our 12U roster — we'd love to talk to you about a spot.” Before the $2,400 fall-and-spring package, read this. Travel softball, showcase circuits, and private hitting lessons all promise the same thing: a path to something bigger. The Real Cost of Youth Softball is the plain-language guide that separates what actually helps from what just moves money out of your account — researched from scratch specifically for this sport rather than adapted from another one. What's inside: • Why softball recruiting is “one door, not two” — and what that means for how early to start caring • An age-by-age skill and development guide, ages 5–18 • How softball's scholarship math actually works (it's not what most parents assume) • How to evaluate a travel program before you pay for one • The recruiting calendar, NCAA eligibility, and NIL — explained in plain language • What burnout actually looks like, and how to catch it before she quits Quick facts parents ask about most:
• Is a “scholarship offer” the same as a full ride? Usually not — softball is an NCAA “equivalency” sport, so most recruits get a partial award, not a full ride. • Does softball have a pro draft like baseball? No. For almost every player who earns a roster spot, that spot is the destination, not a stepping stone. • Does early specialization actually help? The research is genuinely unsettled — outcomes differ by whether a kid specializes by choice or under pressure. • Is this just the baseball book with terms swapped? No — softball's scholarship structure and lack of a pro-vs-college fork make it a different calculation, researched independently. Samuel Duffey is a retired Army veteran and a youth football and basketball coach of 15-plus years who helped start West Edmond Youth Athletics. His own hands-on coaching has been football and basketball, not softball — he says so plainly rather than overstate it.
